Why do I automatically receive 0 points for essay questions when I submit my assignment?

All essay questions require manual grading by your instructor.  When you submit an assignment with essay questions, you will see a note that states "Your instructor has yet to score this question".  Also, a reminder is sent to your instructor on their "home" tab in Connect to grade your essay questions.  You don't receive any points until your instructor manually grades these essay type questions.  When your instructor manual grades each essay question, your assignment score listed in your "reports" tab will be automatically updated.

Note: If you have multiple attempts at the assignment, you won't be able to start another attempt at the assignment until your instructor grades your essay question(s).
